Remote Work Best Practices

Thriving in the Virtual Office

Remote work requires a different set of disciplines. Without a manager looking over your shoulder, you are the CEO of your day.

1. Visibility is Vital

In an office, people see you working. Remotely, you are invisible unless you communicate.

  • Status Updates: Use Slack/Teams statuses to show when you are "Deep Work" vs "Available."
  • Over-communicate: Give regular progress updates. Don't wait to be asked.
  • Camera On: Turn your camera on during meetings to build rapport and show engagement.

2. The Workspace Setup

Separate "work" from "living." Even if it's just a corner of a room, designate it as your office. Ergonomics matter—invest in a good chair and monitor height.

3. Boundaries and Burnout

The danger of remote work isn't doing too little; it's doing too much. Set a hard "End of Day" ritual (e.g., closing the laptop, going for a walk) to psychologically transition to personal time.

4. Asynchronous Etiquette

Respect time zones. When sending a message, provide all context upfront (links, screenshots) so the recipient can answer fully without a back-and-forth delay.
